Prescott’s premier concert band will open its season with an array of traditional marches, folk tunes and a virtuoso trumpet performance accompanied by the full band. Downbeat for the concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Davis Learning Center on the Embry-Riddle University campus, 3700 Willow Creek Rd., Prescott.

Although Ferdinand Herold’s opera Zampa has faded from modern repertoires, its Overture has survived as a concert staple, its energetic bombastic opening sets the stage for an exciting ride. That mood continues with the Band’s performance of March Festivo by Edward Madden, which features a light and lively introduction by the woodwinds followed by a slower majestic section for the horns, a news release stated.

One of the many high points of this concert is the performance of the traditional song of the bull fight, La Virgen De La Macarena. The piece starts with the familiar tune that introduces the trumpet solo. From then on be prepared for a spectacular show of pyrotechnics from the soloist. For this role we are fortunate to have Brad Moors who will be recognized by many as the bugler at many local veterans and other patriotic events and as leader of his six piece “little big band,” the release stated.

More will be heard from the trumpet section as the band performs the concert band version of Johannes Hanssen’s Valdres March, a delightful melody celebrating the beauty of the Valdres region of Norway that lies between Bergen and Oslo. Rounding out the program is an unusual Brazilian tango in the second movement of Alfred Reed’s Second Suite for Band, the ever-popular ballad, Greensleeves, and excerpts from the movie, Beauty and the Beast plus other old and new favorites, the release stated.

Admission prices are; Adult $12, Youth $5. Tickets on sale at the door.
