The 18th edition of the Whiskey Off-Road mountain biking series this month is bringing with it one of the top bluegrass acts in the country, Greensky Bluegrass, and the band that will warm up the crowd is Prescott’s very own Cross-Eyed Possum.
The downtown Prescott concert, which has live music beginning at 10:30 a.m., is Saturday, April 29 — right in the middle of the Epic Rides Whiskey Off-Road April 28-30.
“We are really excited … not only because of Greensky Bluegrass’ popularity, but also because thanks to the Arizona Office of Tourism’s support we are able to provide this concert free of charge to the public,” said Todd Sadow, Epic Rides founder and president.
Greensky Bluegrass will headline the free Community Concert at the Whiskey Off-Road mountain bike event on Goodwin Street next to the courthouse plaza. Considered one of the top bluegrass acts in this uniquely American genre, Greensky will arrive in Prescott after their appearance as a headlining act at the WinterWondergrass Festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and Lake Tahoe, California.
“They’re the best in bluegrass in America today, and they have followers like the Grateful Dead did,” Sadow added.
From Kalamazoo, Michigan, Greensky Bluegrass has grown from three original members to five since their formation in 2000, touring across North America and growing a devoted following as evidenced by three consecutive sell-out performances Red Rocks Amphitheatre in summer 2022. Greensky Bluegrass has also earned critical acclaim, debuting two albums at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums Chart and, according to Rolling Stone magazine, status as “representing the genre for a whole new generation.”
The band’s most recent album, Stress Dreams, was described by Rolling Stone as having “… hard driving rhythms, speedy solos, ascendant harmonies — as a foundation for a broadly inclusive sound that features wide-open psychedelia and sturdy Americana songcraft.”
The Cross-Eyed Possum
Winner of the 2022 Pickin’ in the Pines Bluegrass & Acoustic Music Festival, The Cross-Eyed Possum consists of identical twin brothers Jason Howard (upright bass & lead vocals) and Jonah Howard (guitar & backing vocals), as well as Keenan Hammack (mandolin & backing vocals).
The trio performs mostly original music written by the brothers Howard, inspired by a mix of the wide genres of music they grew up with (Americana, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Bluegrass, Folk), their Jazz and Classical university experiences, and their stories of life on the road, according to their website.
Cross-Eyed Possum has performed at the Pure Imagination Festival in Prescott, and the OFOAM festival in Ogden, Utah. They also have shared the stage with Fantastic Negrito, Katie Pruitt, Rising Appalachia, Sierra Hull, and Dawes. The group toured the Pacific Northwest, Tennessee, New Orleans, Texas, and Colorado in their van and have on their YouTube channel, VanLifeBandLife.
Sadow is proud to have such a strong Prescott band in the Saturday lineup.
