New Orleans and Chicago have always been unique cities. They are complex and mysterious, so it makes sense that jazz should follow the same tune.

The Jazz Journey series returns for its next concert in a 2023 series of jazz music exploration, with “From New Orleans to Chicago.” The Prescott Jazz Summit All-Star Combo will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 10, in the Elks Theatre’s Crystal Hall, on the third floor of the Performing Arts Center, 117 E. Gurley St.

Chicago-style jazz originated in southern musicians moving north after 1917, bringing with them the New Orleans “Dixieland,” sometimes called “hot jazz” styles.

Many believe jazz is a product of the special cultural environment found in New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Traces of French and Spanish roots along with the resilience of African influences and the flavor of European immigration mixed and mingled together to produce America’s most distinctive musical style.

The Jazz Journey series brings together musicians and singers from around Arizona to present evenings that will include not only the music but historical facts and anecdotes about the music and the musicians who have performed America’s True Art Form for over 100 years.

Beer, wine and other beverages are available for purchase at the performance. Parties of four or six will be given their own table (as available).
