The 4GENTS will lead you on a musical journey that features the hits of Jersey legends, The Four Seasons, to the sun and surf of California with the melodies of The Beach Boys and a few stops in between. Take this road trip with The 4GENTS as they travel across the map singing the hits. The 4GENTS are stopping in Prescott on their nationwide tour, Coast to Coast, for a performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at the Elks Theatre, 117 E. Gurley St.
The group’s members are Juan Aguirre, Greg Guenther, Matthew Holter and Jose “Chach” Snook. Aguirre spoke with Across the Street ahead of the upcoming performance. The following interview was edited for length and clarity.
How did you get started singing?
I didn’t start singing until college. I always loved music. I played in the orchestra in high school. I was more into sports back then. I needed one more class to keep my scholarship. I was one class short. In Mexican culture, we serenade our mothers on Mother’s Day and they heard me sing a few times for, you know, these Mother’s Day serenades and they’re like, “You have a good voice. You should take voice lessons.” I was like, “Yeah, whatever,” you know, “I’m not too interested.” But then when I needed a class, I saw that they had a class at the UofA called Class Voice. It was easy. You didn’t need to audition and it was three credits, exactly what I needed to keep my scholarship. So, I took Class Voice and I started kind of liking it. Our our instructor noticed that I was a low bass and said, “Hey, you know what? They’re desperate here and the choirs are always looking for a low bass.”
How did the 4GENTS get started?
I started doing operas in musical theater and then one show that I was in, Les Miserables, I was playing the playing the role of Javert. Three of the guys who are in this group were in that show. So when we did this musical, Les Miserables, we were just sitting there bored at rehearsal and we’re sitting there in the green room. So, we started singing a cappella, you know, all three of us. We did a song from an Elvis show a cappella, and then people started showing up like, “Oh, what was that? We thought that was a recording. That was beautiful. You guys sound great together.” Then Matt got the idea, “You know, they’re right. We should form a group. All we need is a baritone. So, we found Greg to fill the baritone part.
