Take a musical journey through jazz standards, gospel and blues, guided by an engaging entertainer known for her powerful vocal range and smooth delivery. In “An Evening with Sandra Bassett,” the sultry chanteuse and her band will perform songs you know and love — in an intimate cabaret setting — at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center, on Yavapai College’s Prescott Campus, 1100 E. Sheldon St.
Originally from Detroit, and now based in Phoenix, Bassett embraces the musical history of her birthplace and enjoys performing in many styles, from R&B to Motown. Bassett is an accomplished keyboardist in addition to playing the alto sax. Her album, Just for You, featuring beloved jazz and R&B standards, was released independently in 2018 and promoted heavily, with live appearances in the U.S. and Japan. She is a workshop leader and speaker, having lectured on jazz at the Musical Instrument Museum, Tempe Center for the Arts, and other venues in the Phoenix area.
“It all started in a small white church in Detroit,” Bassett stated. “I sat next to my mother in the choir stand at every rehearsal and learned how to sing and blend my voice with those around me.
“I learned harmonies, song structure, and how to lead songs. My mother placed me in several community choirs and theater groups, where I increased my vocal capability. At the age of 5 I began piano lessons. This led me to learn six other instruments and allowed me to be a Minister of Music at the age of 16. In college, I participated in the Gospel Choir and continued my work as a Minister of Music at various churches.”
Tickets are $59 and include reserved seating at a table onstage. Appetizers, desserts, coffee/tea and a cash bar are available. Seating is limited.
