Take a comedic journey through the ups and downs of being in a long-term relationship when award-winning comedian Mark Cordes performs his critically acclaimed one-man show, “The Spouse Whisperer,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Elks Theatre, 117 E. Gurley St., Prescott.

From his humble start at an open mic, Cordes worked his way up the comedy ladder before developing this one-man show.

“I started professionally, you know, quit my day job, went on the road as a comedy club guy 35 years ago,” Cordes said. “I started getting to the age where the comedy club audiences were much younger and that’s great when you’re young but as I got older and my peers quit going to comedy clubs, pretty much, I said, ‘I need to come up with a show that I could do in a theater, places like the Elks and country clubs and places like that.’ And I realized that all the material that I really enjoyed writing about was about relationships.”

“The Spouse Whisperer” takes the audience through a hilarious insight into relationships from the first date to exploring all the ups and downs of marriage.

“It’s everything from love at first sight until death do us part and all the funny stuff in between,” he said. “My wife’s hilarious. We see the humor in relationships and I’m a big believer in, you know, people that laugh together tend to have an easier time of it. They kind of stay together, or it sure helps the odds, let’s put it that way.”

Before the show, Cordes asks the audience to fill out a comment or question that he reads during the second half of the performance.

“At intermission, we get a bucket full of those questions and the second half of the show I answer them and oh, my God, it’s hilarious the questions that you get,” Cordes said.

“I’ve done this show literally from coast to coast, and the questions all tend to be in the same vein, you know, ‘How come my wife isn’t the way she used to be? How come my husband doesn’t listen to me anymore? How come my husband wants to have sex more than I do?’ I mean, it’s hilarious, the questions I get.”

In his performance, Cordes instills an overall positive sense of what being in a relationship is all about.

“It’s pro-relationship,” he said. “I used to watch comedians, men and women, they would get on stage and all they did was bashed their partner or the opposite sex and I would sit there and go, ‘If that’s the case, why are you married or why do you want to be married?’ So, I poke fun at both sides but the takeaway is if you found somebody to get through this crazy life, hang on tight and enjoy the ride.”
