What better way to celebrate World Book Day than to meet and support top Southwest authors, novelists, historians, poets, publishers and writers of children’s books? The Prescott Area Arts and Humanities Council (PAAHC), Arizona’s oldest arts advocacy organization, is hosting its 3rd annual Thumb Butte Book Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 23, in the Crystal Ballroom on the third floor of the Elks Performing Arts Center, 117 E. Gurley St., Prescott.

PAAHC is still looking for volunteers to help with the event. “The volunteers are not flowing in like we had hoped because it seems like there’s a lot of people dealing with stuff,” said Coleen Bornschlegel, a volunteer board member of PAAHC. “We are still looking for some volunteers to help with the day of, but other than that, we are really excited. Our authors are excited to be there. We’ve got our (drawing) prizes lined up.”

According to Bornschlegal, there will be over $800 worth of prizes from 20 area businesses.

“We got some home and garden packages, we got some gift cards, a local artist donated some handmade mugs; so we’ve got kind of a variety, quite a few things,” Bornschlegal said. “Also, following our tradition of a book festival, the authors themselves as vendors will donate a couple of their books to be bundled up as (drawing) prizes as well. So, we’ve got a cool variety and we’ll be announcing winners for prizes pretty much the whole time.”

The event is free to attend and tickets for the drawing will be on sale at the event for $2 each or three for $5.

People do not need to be present to win.

“If they purchase tickets and then, you know, hang out at the festival and leave, if their ticket is drawn, we’ll contact them after and they can collect,” Bornschlegal said.

She explained that one of the authors in attendance, Alora P., is a tween writer. “We have a young author, she is under the age of 10 and her dad helped her to actually publish her book,” Bornschlegal said. “You’ve got a junior author in Prescott Valley who will be representing some of the junior authors here at the library.”
