The “World’s Oldest Rodeo,” held at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds from July 1-7, offers a week-long celebration of rodeo heritage and Western culture. In addition to the traditional rodeo events – such as bull riding, barrel racing and team roping – attendees can enjoy specialty acts, as well as live music at the Rodeo Dance.
Among the highlights are performances by barrelman Matt Tarr, charro Tomas Garcilazo and appearances from the Broken Spoke Clydesdales. Live music from Justin Hitson and Southbound will be performed nightly from July 4-6 at the Rodeo Dance, with each show starting at 8 p.m.
Barrelman Matt Tarr
Matt Tarr is a rising star in Pro Rodeo making a significant impact in the industry. Tarr has been immersed in rodeo and livestock since childhood, starting roping at age 3. His path in bullfighting revealed his true calling as a rodeo entertainer. Known for his quick wit and infectious humor, Tarr is a standout as a clown and barrelman, committed to being a positive role model.
Tomas Garcilazo
Tomas Garcilazo, a third-generation charro from Mexico City, was introduced early to the family tradition of La Charrería, Mexico’s national sport. With a deep pride in horsemanship and roping, Garcilazo has dedicated his life to showcasing this heritage worldwide. His performances, characterized by refined horsemanship and maguey rope artistry, have captivated audiences across Europe, Canada, Brazil, the U.S. and Mexico.
Notable appearances include Broadway’s “Will Rogers Follies,” Disney’s Wild West Show in Paris, and performances for U.S. and Mexico presidents. A staple at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for 26 years, Tomas has also toured with the Aguilar family’s “Jaripeo Sin Fronteras.”
Broken Spoke Clydesdales
The majestic Broken Spoke Clydesdales will also be making an appearance at this year’s rodeo. These impressive draft horses are known for their strength, elegance and coordinated performances. The Clydesdales, led by their expert handlers, will demonstrate a series of routines that showcase their power and beauty, providing a unique and awe-inspiring spectacle for rodeo-goers.
Rodeo Dance
The festivities continue with the rodeo dance, a highlight for many attendees looking to unwind and enjoy live music. This year’s dance will feature Justin Hitson and Southbound, a band known for their energetic performances and blend of traditional and modern country music. Their sets promise a mix of original songs and country favorites, creating the perfect atmosphere for rodeo fans to kick up their heels and celebrate. The band will take the stage at the Depot Marketplace parking lot, 303 N. Montezuma St., ensuring a night of toe-tapping tunes and lively dancing.
